Dateline – March 12, 2008  Fresh Melody Escapes from Melody Garden!  Last seen humming through the air near your house!

Hello everybody, Tiny Scarecrow here.   Yes, the tabloid-style headline is true. A melody escaped from Old MacDonald’s Musical farm earlier today ... and, painful as it may be, I have to admit it was my fault. Or ... at least partially. Let us say I share the blame with a bag of delicious peanuts.  Perhaps I should elucidate.  A big part of my job here at Old Mac Donald’s Farm (EIEIO) is helping take care of the baby melodies in Melody Garden – and let me tell you it is not as easy as it sounds – they are tricky – and if I’m not right there when the melody pops out of the ground to catch it in a melody bucket – well it goes flying through the air and there's a distinct possibility I may never get it back.  Never is a very long time. It's longer than the time you have to spend waiting for breakfast when it's the middle of the night, longer than the time you spend waiting for the school bus, longer than the time it takes to finally grow up and be big enough for the big-kid swings. Never is a really, really long time.

But I digress. Earlier today I was enjoying a delicious bag of peanuts (not the kind in the jar but the kind in the bag that are still in the shell) and you know how sometimes you’re trying to get that one ornery peanut out of the shell and you twist and turn it and try to pick out the little shell shavings and maybe you blow in your hand a little annnnnnnd ...

OOPS!

The peanut fell right out of my hand onto the ground. Of course, as fate would have it, right when I bent over to pick it up was the very moment the melody sprang from the ground.  That new melody went dashing around like a rabbit on a skateboard drinking a soda! I chased after it as fast as my little stuffed feet could go. A brand new melody can’t fly too far off the ground for the first few minutes which is lucky for a tiny scarecrow like myself.

This way! That way! Back over here! Under that violin stalk! Behind the Tuba Tree! After the chase went on for over 15 minutes (resulting in a completely spilled bag of delicious peanuts might I add) the new melody went soaring up, up, up into the sky! I jumped as high as I could, but it was already beyond my reach. The melody had escaped!

Latest reports say that it was last heard flying through your neighborhood so keep an ear out for it!  If you hear a melody on the wind, or you start humming a tune that you’ve never heard before – it just might be the one that escaped this morning.  It's really quite harmless.  Just try to catch it in a regulation grade 3 Melody Bucket, or if you don’t have one lying around try to memorize the tune.  You see, this melody doesn’t even have lyrics.  That’s right – it is a song without words!  So the moment you catch it or memorize the tune – the only way to tame it is to add words.  Then it will be a song ready to share.
